Unit Topic: District Mapping using Rubicon Atlas Software
Unit Overview: The Monkton Central School community has been shaped by its children. Students will interview past and present students to learn about the cultural history of the students.

Unit Topic: Northern Forest Ecology and School Yard Habitat Project
Unit Overview: As students participate in our existing Northern Forest curriculum they will engage in a newly developed community service-learning project. Students will identify the needs of the school community (natural and human) and use their science skills and knowledge to addressing the needs they identify. They will use technology to document to collect input, advocate for the project and share their work with the larger community.

Unit Topic: Who Lives in Our Community?
Unit Overview: The kindergarten class begins their year by identifying who they, as individuals, are. As the year progresses, the focus travels wider and wider. When the focus is their community of their town, this is when this unit begins. In this unit, the student will answer the question: Who Lives in Our Community? Showing how the community members influence the lives of the members of the kindergarten class, an extension of this question: How Am I Part of the Community? will also be answered. Using a variety of resources, the students will learn about the community of a town, and in this case, the community of Lincoln.

Unit Topic: Community
Unit Overview: Monkton Central School, (MCS), is a community shaped over time by children and adults. The students will learn about this population by interviewing and photographing people who are or have been part of the MCS community. They will share their discoveries with multi-media presentations to their peers in school and with the adults in the Monkton town community

Unit Topic: Service learning/Discovering Community
Unit Overview: Media teams of students will interview local residents who have had dry stone walls built by local artisan Dave "Stoney" Mason. Through this project students will examine Dave's impact on the local landscape and the people he has worked for; will reflect upon the power of story to convey emotions and ideas; and, in the end, will compose a series of narratives about Dave's work, his effect on the community's physical and human landscape and reflect upon their own concept of what constitutes a satisfying and successful life.

Unit Overview: Students in the 4th grade will research the history of Weybridge over the past 50-75 years by interviewing and photographing local residents. The students will use the information they have gathered about the history of Weybridge, Vermont to create a narrated film product that demonstrates their understanding of local history and how it relates to historic events beyond Weybridge.

Unit Topic: Discovering the Monkton Central School Community
Unit Overview: In this project kids will refine their understanding of community, build an in-depth understanding their classroom and Monkton Central School (MCS) communities, and learn how the MCS community has or has not changed through time. Students will use digital media, primarily audio and photography for both research activities and then the creation of multi-media presentations for school assemblies, Town Meeting, and the community at large.
